- How did Kaikoura get its name?
The name Kaikoura means 'to eat crayfish' and even today, the local crayfish industry is a vital contributor to the region's economy.

Accommodation in Kaikoura offers travellers a great choice. Luxury lodges and B&B style accommodation such as Fyffe Country Lodge tend to lie around the outskirts of the town, whilst backpackers and motel style accommodation is available in the town.
- When should I book my accommodation in Kaikoura?
As with any popular destination, Kaikoura can get busy, so it's always wise to book ahead, especially near the annual Kaikoura Seafood Festival held each October. For more exclusive, luxury accommodation in Kaikoura such as Fyffe Country Lodge, we recommend making an early reservation if possible as due the nature of our accommodation, we only have a limited number of suites and rooms available. We will of course, do our utmost to accommodate you.
- What sort of things can I do in Kaikoura?
Kaikoura is a great place in which to unwind with a glass of wine, as it's home to the southern most winery in Marlborough. However, slightly more energetic activities include whale watching (of course), golf, fishing, swimming, skydiving, flightseeing, walking, dolphin and seal swimming. There is also bird watching (including albatross, shearwaters, shags, mollymawks and petrels), horse riding, cave tours, kayaking and farm tours. If this all seems like too much choice, we are happy to offer some recommendations based on what our guests have enjoyed most.
- How do I get to Kaikoura?
If you have a car, Kaikoura lies about 90 minutes drive north of Christchurch, situated off Highway 1, which runs along the east coast of New Zealand's South Island. The town can also be reached by bus, train and air services.
- How do I reach Mt Fyffe Country Lodge?
Our accommodation in Kaikoura lies 6km to the south of the town, located just off the main highway and is very easy to find.
