Kaikoura New Zealand
Kaikoura is most famous for its whale-watching and encounters with other marine mammals including dolphins and seals. Humpback whales along with the giant Sperm whales, Orca (killer whales) Right and Blue whales are seen playing just off the coast. Hector and Dusky dolphins are seen in pods of between 3 and 400. Fur Seals line the coastline and wandering albatross grace the cold pacific waters.
Whale Watching and Dolphin and Seal Swimming Tours are available on a daily basis. Other local attractions range from scenic helicopter flights to quad bike safaris, golf, deep sea fishing and tramping.
Kaikoura is a region with stunning scenery; where the mountains meet the sea, where the rugged beauty of the coastline is hard to match. Mt Fyffe towers some 1600m above the Kaikoura Township while the Kaikoura Seaward Range extends to the Southern Alps. These mountains are snow-capped from late May until September and often much later.
Crayfish – similar to lobster – is a local delicacy and a luxury for seafood lovers: a must whether you stay in Kaikoura or are just passing through, and always found on the dinner menu at “The Fyffe” restaurant.
